Texas!!!

"We've been in Texas for two days and we've already facilitated 5 workshops... WOW!  Just yesterday, we were at Nimitz High School facilitating two workshops with students. These ended with laughs, cheers & the making of new friends. Afterwards, we led a professional development session with the faculty. During Decora's performance, there was point where the emotion was over flowing and the fourth wall was knocked down. We all (us & staff) came together for the common goal to make sure that no child is left behind. Today, we had the time to visit the area where our former US President JFK was assassinated. Just being in that area gave me a sudden realization that we are truly blessed to be alive and be doing the good work that is needed in this world. Work that is needed now more than ever. Moreover, we were in Sam Houston Middle School and gave the youth an arsenal of techniques to help them better understand their talents, abilities, and to utilize them to their highest potential.   Each student has a gift. It may differ from the next person but there is a unique gift to be found.  Stay tuned for more updates... because we're just getting started!  Ashe!"

Mommas Hip Hop Kitchen breakdown by Decora

700 people show up to see over 50 amazing female artists perform and show their creative works. The stage filled with poets, mc's and DJ resonated with collective activism through art. Founder Lah Tere formerly of Rebel Diaz hosted and performed gracefully. Throughout the performance photos from graffiti artist Too Fly swam on the 50 by 50 foot screen in the background. The 4th annual mommas hip hop kitchen also included a diverse range of ages and ethnicities on stage and in the audience. It's official! Mommas Hip Hop Kitchen is one of my favorite annual events!

Big Picture High School!

We were welcomed with screams & applause from the students as the video was being played on a HUGE Projector screen. Students who have never written 3 page essays, wrote 3 page essays about the video's message and what it meant to them. The top three essays were read out loud in front of the students by the students who wrote them.

In all, the students were very excited and appreciative with our presence and were given signed posters.

Aaarrrre youuuu readyyyyy?

This year...is the year to get it... done. What is "it" you ask? Build literacy and creativity in the minds of Youth that have been led to believe they lack something. Create hope in the souls of those hermanos and sisters whose eyes are closing. Spark love in a heart filled with hate and determination in a mind whose legs are dwindling. We eat, breathe and drink passion so every fellow human we encounter can be opened to possibility. Simply possibility! Because that...that concept alone placed in the mind of a person creates boundless worlds for us all to partake in.

DJ H2O at Coquito

I had a feeeeling...that Satuuurrday night was gonnna be a GOOD NIIIGHT!...and it was.

The food was perfect, the service was excellent and DJ H2O had everyone working off their meals. Coquito was PACKED! People danced, conversed, enjoyed themselves and got away from the freezing temperatures by dancing ALL NIGHT LONG! DJ H2O had us moving from Salsa, to Merengue, to Dance and Hip Hop and mucho mas. Every other song sparked memories or forced the dancers to create new ones. If you missed it then...what can I write other than there will be many more. Keep your eyes open and dance apparel ready because DJ H2O will be spinning in various NY locations soon.

A ReadNex Moment @ Kripalu!

A ReadNex Moment

5 days at Kripalu. 5 days retreating. 5 days building our minds, bodies & souls. Building each other and building upon our goals.

Each day we spent at Kripalu I seemed to cross off an entire list of things that I needed to figure out. Each day I felt more empowered and more able to do the work that we do. I felt cleansed of doubt and ready to start 2011 strong.

Who would have thought that Yoga would be for me? We ate good food. Amazing food. Tasted wonderful and was great for our bodies. We worked out, meditated, danced and did Yoga. Discussed, painted, wrote and built upon our wisdom.

It was a 5 day Kundalini Yoga workshop focused on the creative arts. While there we also did some Kripalu Yoga classes and Yoga Dance. We were frequently active and when we weren't we had time to meditate, reflect and write. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to be there and the scholarship we each received which made it possible. My journal is now full of thoughts, haiku's and "Aha" moments (sudden re-organizations of thought).

To everyone reading this...we care about you. Please take the time to "retreat" in your own way. It may be a walk, a workout, or perhaps just a simple journal entry. Allow yourself the time to breathe and reflect. Give yourself the time because you deserve it. Even the mightiest warriors must rest and rebuild themselves. Please take the time as we need you. This world needs you and most of all tomorrow need you.
